If you’ve had the same boiler or central heating system for an extended period of time, you may well have noticed the develop some recurring faults or issues.
Dealing with these can be challenging, as you may be unsure whether to call in an accredited engineer to undertake a repair or simply have the existing unit replaced.
In this post, we’ll look at some of the key considerations when dealing with an underperforming boiler, whilst asking whether it’s time to replace the unit in question.
How Old is your Boiler?
As a general rule, modern boilers should last for up to 15 years, whilst A-rated units can last even longer depending on the precise model and the brand.
So, if your boiler fits this description, we’d recommend that you have the unit serviced at least once-a-year and canvas the opinion of an accredited engineer to determine the right course of action.
If you own a non-condensing unit that’s starting to develop faults, you may also want to consider replacing this even if it’s a little younger. This will bring immense efficiency benefits and considerable savings over time.
Is the Boiler Experiencing Frequent Breakdowns?
If you find that a Gas Safe-registered engineer is visiting your home at least once-a-year (outside of an annual service), you’ll need to consider the cumulative cost of these repairs and contrast this with the price of installation.
These costs must also be scaled over a period of years, particularly as your boiler is only likely to deteriorate over time.
If they amount to more than the price of installing your preferred boiler type and heating system, the time has undoubtedly come to replace your tired and outdated unit.
Are your Bills Creeping Up without Explanation?
We touched earlier on modern, A-rated boilers, which typically boast an efficiency rating in excess of 90%.
Conversely, older and G-rated units can run efficiency levels of between 55% and 70%, and this represents a significant difference that needs careful consideration!
Now, by transitioning from a G-rated boiler to an A-rated alternative, you can save approximately £200 on your heating bills each and every year! In this instance, you can theoretically repay any investment in a new boiler after a period of between 12 and 18 months.
